Getting to Know Jepilyn Matthis

  • What is your go-to coffee order?  Not a coffee drinker...Earl Grey tea please.

  • What do you do in the mornings to prepare to go to a school?  I usually prepare at night...in the mornings I'm just getting ready and out the door. Mentally run through things on my commute to the school.

  • What is your favorite part of interaction with teachers in your partner schools?  I love hearing how things are playing out in classrooms for teachers, and feeling like I can offer a little support to them in their work with their students.

  • What is your favorite children’s book series and why?  Probably Elephant and Piggie because they make me laugh.

  • Tell me about a read aloud that you think is particularly beautiful.  My new favorite read aloud is Crossings for several reasons...absolutely beautiful pictures, great information about the animals, and I love reading to children about how people are thinking of animals and their needs as expansions to the world occur.

  • What’s your favorite sticky-note color?  Blue

  • When do you do your best lesson/staff development planning? Usually on the weekends.

  • Favorite office supply/ classroom gadget?  Love fine tip marker style pens.

  • What do you do when you’re not staff developing? I feel like I"m always working on staff development but I do like to go for walks.

  • What’s your favorite pen? NONE

  • How do you stay organized? Calendar and lists

  • What’s the state of your desk? (organized, messy, etc.) Definitely messy.  I'm organized everywhere else in my life but not there.

  • What are you learning right now? I'm trying to better understand K-2 screeners and their role in schools.

  • What does professional development mean to you?  Promoting learning...coming together to talk, share and discuss ideas that make us stronger in our practice of supporting students.

  • What is your favorite thing about Lucy Calkins? Her drive and her passion for doing what is right for teachers and students.

  • What is one of your hidden talents?  I know how to do bobbin lace.

  • What is your dream summer break vacation? European or Greek Isle Cruise

  • What makes a “good day” at a school?  Every day is a good day when I'm working with colleagues that I enjoy and students.

If you could pass on any wisdom to students, what would you share? Be the best you can be and don't worry about the rest.
