Join us for a 4-day virtual institute focused on empowering young writers and re-energizing your writing instruction and developing confident, passionate writers in every classroom. This institute is designed for first-time and returning participants as it will reinforce the foundations of the teaching of reading and also share The Reading & Writing Project’s latest thinking and research.
Cultivate Strong, Confident Writers
In today’s world, it’s more important than ever for students to have strong voices and the ability to express themselves powerfully through writing. During this institute, you’ll learn how to address gaps in writing stamina and skills that many students face, turning these challenges into opportunities for growth. We’ll share our latest research and best practices, drawn from our work developing the new Writing Units of Study.
Practical Tools and Deep Curriculum Insights
You’ll gain access to new tools, mentor texts, and methods from the Units of Study in Writing that will invigorate your writing instruction. From understanding writing progressions to using formative assessments effectively, you’ll come away with a wealth of practical strategies. We’ll explore how to build on skills across grade levels, so your teaching fits into a spiral of development that supports long-term growth.
Energize Your Workshop with Small Groups and Conferrin
Learn how to bring energy and intimacy into your writing workshop by building relationships with your students through conferring and small group work. You’ll focus on methods that make a writing classroom feel personal and powerful, creating spaces where writers feel seen and heard. This will include ways to help writers grow through feedback that affirms their unique voices.
Fostering Inclusivity and Supporting All Learners
Creating an inclusive writing community is key to ensuring all students succeed. You’ll explore strategies for supporting diverse learners, including English language learners and students with learning differences. You’ll also learn how to use mentor texts to foster social justice in your teaching, ensuring that writing becomes a way for students to explore their own identities and the world around them.
