In your writing workshop, you first need to send the clear message that you see and value each of your kids’ identities. You need to tell stories that highlight the beauty of your students’ languages and cultures, and provide your multilingual students with books that are mirrors for them.

Part of this day will be spent thinking about ways to provide meaningful ideas for generating ideas in our writing workshop. You will learn about ways to support transference and build on students' funds of knowledge using familiar read alouds, digital videos, and stories to build background knowledge. You will learn about ways to lift the level of talk in your classrooms and oral language rehearsal to build on setting up the writers with the language structures and language and vocabulary to talk about the characters in their books. We will study thelatest research about biliteracy and Aida Walqui’s lenses for studying student writing to support your language learners.

This day will also help you plan how to lift the level of your conferring using the latest tools such as the writing checklist, exemplars, mentor texts, and craft cards. You will walk away with a toolkit of ways to mark your read alouds for teaching during conferences, small groups, or mini lessons.
