New York State Literacy Instructional Best Practices

To support school districts across New York State, we are sharing a completed New York Prekindergarten-3rd Grade Literacy Instructional Best Practices At a Glance document, which highlights its alignment with the Units of Study in Reading, Writing, and Phonics.

This alignment serves as a valuable resource for educators and school leaders, illustrating how the Units of Study support and enhance evidence-based literacy instruction. By mapping the Units of Study to the best practices outlined in the guide, we aim to provide clarity and confidence for districts seeking to implement high-quality, research-driven literacy programs.

This document is designed to assist school districts in aligning their existing literacy curriculum with state guidelines, fostering a cohesive approach to literacy instruction that is rooted in the Science of Reading. Educators can use this alignment to identify how the Units of Study address key instructional components, ensuring that students receive comprehensive, developmentally appropriate literacy instruction.

Once the official attestation document is released, we will complete and share that resource to further support districts in their compliance efforts. In the meantime, we encourage educators, literacy specialists, and administrators to explore the alignment document alongside the full Prekindergarten-3rd Grade Literacy Instructional Best Practices Guide to make informed decisions about literacy instruction and curriculum development.
