Units of Study Implementation Support

As authors of the Units of Study in Reading, Writing, and Phonics, the Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower (RWP-M) is uniquely positioned to provide professional development for the curriculum. RWP-M Staff Developers bring a wealth of expertise as experienced educators, including former teachers, coaches, administrators, district leaders, college instructors, researchers, and writers. Below are professional development options designed to support your school or district in implementing the curriculum effectively.

Level 1: Getting Started Workshop

The Getting Started Workshop is a condensed, two-hour virtual session designed to provide teachers with an efficient and focused introduction to the Units of Study resources. This workshop is ideal for schools and districts looking to kickstart their implementation with a streamlined, practical session.

Level 2: Quick Start Units of Study Day

Units of Study days are one-day (6-hour) conferences designed to support teachers in implementing the Units of Study in Reading, Writing, or Phonics. These days are always aligned with school priorities and typically include:

  • An overview of the workshop model and the curriculum.

  • A guided tour of materials, with insider tips about shortcuts and special features.

  • An explanation for how standards are supported across a year-long curriculum.

  • Practical help planning responsive small groups that allow teachers to respond to a full range of student needs.

  • A description of ways to fast-plan teaching, drawing upon support materials, as well as each school-based learning community’s needs.

Level 3: On-Site Professional Development

On-site professional development is the most popular way for schools and districts to partner with The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower (RWP-M). RWP-M offers customized professional development designed to enhance literacy instruction and drive student success. We suggest at least five days of professional development for each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8), although there is no minimum requirement. RWP-M uses a hands-on approach to professional development, which typically includes:

  • Demonstration Teaching & Coaching in Labsite Classrooms: Staff developers model effective literacy practices within classrooms, allowing teachers to observe and try these techniques.

  • Grade-Level Study Groups: Teachers work with staff developers to study student work, reflect on instructional practices, explore the latest research, and plan next steps.

  • A Variety of Teaching Methods: Staff Developers use a blend of direct instruction, guided practice, coaching, and shared inquiry to ensure teachers gain practical, applicable skills.

Schools and districts engaged in on-site professional development also gain access to a wealth of additional resources at no additional charge including monthly Leadership Conferences, access to the Treasure Chest, and opportunities to pilot pre-publication curricula.
