2024 Summer Institutes Overview

We are so excited to collaborate and learn with educators across the globe both virtually and in-person at our Summer Insitutes in June, July, and August! Below are some details about each of our 5 Summer Institutes, which have also been explained in our Summer Institute video above.

Let’s talk about our in-person institute first.

The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower is hosting the New Frontiers in Reading and Writing Institute at our publisher Heinemann’s headquarters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire from Monday July 15 through Thursday July 18.

This institute is designed for teachers, literacy coaches, and leaders who are eager to learn and be part of a community of practice. This week will bring together keynote speakers, our partner organization, Heinemann, and of course The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower team, as we grow our thinking together.

Each day will open with a keynote, followed by small-group morning and afternoon sections on self-selected topics. Days will end with participant-led think tanks. Topics include embracing possibilities in the classroom with AI, ways to strengthen comprehension and build vocabulary, weaving a lively grammar curriculum into your writing workshop, tapping the power of decodable texts, screeners- what are they and how do we use them effectively?, and many more. The session offerings we have on our website will be modified based upon the interests and the needs of your school or district.

We’re excited about this Institute because it’s located in Portsmouth, NH - a picturesque coastal New England town! And we also have after-hours events planned, including a sunset harbor cruise, an evening with food trucks and live music and of course you’ll be able to enjoy a few lobster rolls! The event page holds a comprehensive Portsmouth travel guide our team curated to help you make the most of your time in New Hampshire with us. From historical sites, to outdoor activities, to restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, we have your covered. The event page also links the Summer Institute scholarship application so we encourage you and your teams to apply.

Next, let’s talk about our virtual summer offerings.

The Reading Writing Project at Mossflower is offering 4 virtual summer institutes starting in June: Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling, and Literacy in the Secondary ELA Classroom. Let’s do a quick dive into each.

Our Reading Institute, taking place on Zoom Monday June 24 through Thursday June 27 is ideal for teachers, coaches, and administrators grades K-5.

We will begin with inspirational keynotes and will end with optional choice workshops on an array of topics including knowledge generation, leading effective book clubs, responsible use of screeners, reigniting a love of reading, helping readers transfer phonics to continual texts, and preparation for state assessments. Tracks and sessions are separated by grade band, and there are many options that you can select given your learning needs and the needs of your school or district. Our Writing Institute, taking place on Zoom Monday July 8 through Thursday July 11 is ideal for teachers, coaches, and administrators grades K-5. At RWP-M, we are so excited about this institute because it aligns with the release of our NEW Units of Study in Writing curriculum for grades 3-5.

We are bursting with excitement and eager to share fresh ideas and new methods, armloads of practical tips, high-leverage tools, and favorite new mentor texts. There is no organization that has devoted more time and care to thinking through essential progression and methods for teaching writing. In this institute you will learn state-of-the-art ways to nurture your students to become enthusiastic and proficient writers who can write across genres with independence and joy.

Tracks and sessions are separated by grade level, or you can choose a grade band focusing on all of K-2 or all of 3-5. This is ideal for coaches and leaders who will be supporting teachers across multiple grade levels. From Monday July 22 through Thursday July 25, RWP-M is hosting a Literacy in the Secondary ELA Classroom Institute- with a focus on close reading of fiction, and writing about fiction. This institute is ideal for teachers, coaches, and administrators grades 6-12. This institute will help you bring reading and writing together in your secondary school classrooms so that your students can tap into the power of reading-writing connections.

In this institute, you will learn to:

  • Use book clubs, author studies, and cycles of writing informed by reading

  • Explore irresistible books and short texts that will appeal to teen readers, and can also act as powerful mentor texts

  • Tackle the literary essay, thinking about how to make this genre of writing less formulaic and more meaningful

  • Investigate the power of AI as a source for engagement and instruction

Our Grammar and Spelling Institute, taking place on Zoom Monday July 29 through Thursday August 1 is ideal for teachers, coaches, and administrators grades 2-8.

In this institute, colleagues at The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower will help you support your own knowledge of grammar and phonics and provide you with a brimming toolbox of high leverage and practical resources to take back into your classrooms.

In this institute, you will learn to:

  • Tap into the Science of Reading to bolster spelling instruction

  • Use a series of explicit, systematic, focused grammar lessons that target key standards

  • Understand the reciprocal relationship between reading and spelling using phonics patterns to help spell words

  • Analyze student writing to study spelling development, and to plan next steps based on student needs

We hope this summary of our upcoming Institutes makes you as excited as we are for the summer ahead! If you have any questions at all, we are here to help. Shoot us an email at contact@readingwriting.net. See you this summer!
